It's been reported that 25 states have super lice that are basically immune from your typical treatments including over the counter products. Some even immune to prescription treatment. Super. Lice. That do not die when you douse your head in chemicals...
*Cringe*
(Go on, I know you did when you read that!)
(Are you also suddenly itchy after reading that? I am!)
The following states have confirmed it. Just because your state isn't on the list does not mean you may not have them crawling around!
Alabama
Arizona
Arkansas
California
Connecticut
Florida
Georgia
Illinois
Indiana
Kansas
Kentucky
Maine
Maryland
Massachusetts
Minnesota
Missouri
North Carolina
Ohio
Rhode Island
South Carolina
Tennessee
Texas
Virginia
Washington
Wisconsin
Lice is super contagious and spread by close or direct contact. Don't let your kids share hats, brushes, hair things, towels, or clothes with their friends. Lie can not jump or fly, they crawl from one person or object to the next. All it takes is one louse to cause an outbreak on you or your child. Lice are about the size of a sesame seed and light in color. The nits are usually brown or white and sometimes mistaken for flaking or dandruff, only they won't get shaken out of your hair. They will stick!
So check you kid's hair. Get a fine tooth comb and a magnifying glass if you need one. Check for nits around the hair shaft as they are sometimes easier to spot.
Lice dislike certain smells so spray your kiddos down with peppermint oil, tea tree oil, or throw a little product up in there when you're pulling it up in a pony tail, braid, or bun. For the love of God don't let them wear it lose or with nothing in it. Prevent prevent prevent if you caaaaan! Also make sure that if you DO happen to find lice, you are also taking measures to kill them all and keep them from coming back! Wash ALL clothes and linen in hot water and heat dry them on high for approx 20 minutes if you can. Wash stuffed animals, but if you can't bag them in a sealed bag for a few weeks. Dunk your brushes and hair stuff in rubbing alcohol for awhile, clean them with hot water (boil them if you can?) or just throw them away and buy new. Vacuum, vacuum, vacuum. Vacuum everything. your carpets...furniture...cars.. everything!
Also, remember. Having lice doesn't mean you're gross or dirty and it shouldn't be something you're embarrassed about. It's just a sucky situation that most everyone has had to deal with at some point in their lives.
