I equate Britain with many things.
Sophisticated accents. Fashion. The Spice Girls. A slew of good-looking and/or talented actors. That charming little thing they do when they insert "u's" into otherwise boring words - flavours, colours. Oh, Britain - you're so silly.
Anyway, what I don't associate with the U.K. is chocolate. I know that Cadbury is a U.K. company, but I don't usually acknowledge it's homeland when I eat it. I just ... eat it.
There's a small British Foods Section in the supermarket that I frequent, and I took the review as an excuse to browse it. Mars Bars, pudding mix, your standard stereotypical stuff. Then I spotted the Nestle Aero bar.
"Feel the bubbles". "Feel the bubbles"? Well, now I'm curious. No artificial colours, flavours (tee hee), or preservatives. Suitable for vegetarians (no joke - it's really printed on the label). And it's MINT. I buy it.
The British like to call their calories "energy" - as in, this bar has 829kJ of energy. Which sounds so much better than 243 calories. I remind myself that I'm about to consume energy, not calories. Energy.
The description reads, "Smooth milk chocolate filled with peppermint flavoured bubbles". There's also a little bubble that reads, "Enjoying chocolate as a part of a varied, balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle, is one of life's little pleasures". Besides the unnecessary comma, I find this quite charming. But it's okay, Aero, put on your sweatpants and don't be afraid to fart. We're committed now. I've bought you already.
Upon breaking a piece off the bar, the servings look like little boobs and butts. This pleases me.
I like them! The texture is definitely weird as hell. It reminds me of a cross-cut sponge - if it were made of green plastic.
I thought the texture was going to be like a mousse, but the "bubbles" had the texture of regular chocolate - just a bit airier due to the holes. The mint flavor wasn't toothpastey or off-putting - it was pleasant and mild. I wouldn't have minded had it been a bit minty-er. As you chew, the whole thing is creamy and smooth on the tongue. I give it a 3 out of 5. I wouldn't necessarily go out of my way to buy it again, but it's fun and tasty.
What's your favorite international treat?
