Took my dd1, 6 yrs old to the doctor today because she broke out in a rash last night after having cold symptoms to a week. The rash looks much better today. It was only on her chest, trunk and upper back. The doctor took a quick look and said it looks like Fifths. I immediately panicked because I know that can cause serious complications durning pregnancy. The doctor also did a strep swab just to rule it out but said she really didn't think it was strep because the symptoms weren't lining up. Well the strep came back positive. I had my younger dd2 with me and they tested her as well. She was having no symptoms. Well she has strep too. So I asked the doctor is she still thought it was Fifths and she said yes, she can have both at the same time. Well now I'm worried! I called my doctor, explained that my daughters tested positive for strep. Waiting for a call back. Anyone been exposed to fifths and had a positive outcome? I googled(don't know why I do that) and it said women that get fifths before 20 weeks have a 10% chance of miscarriage. I'm 16 weeks

My son had it while I was in my first trimester with DS2... once they have the rash they are no longer contagious so there is nothing you can really do about it except hope you aren't affected. As long as you wash your hands regularly there is a good chance you wont even get it.
Just FYI I didn't catch it and DS2 is here and healthy.

@ ussmith, did they test your blood to check for immunity or recent exposure? I had my blood drawn yesterday, I'm praying I'm immune. She had cold symptoms for days before seeing the doctor, runny nose and coughing all over the place so if that's what it is, I'm sure we all have been infected. I too started with cold symptoms around the same time she did and cold symptoms are a symptom if it.

I was getting blood drawn for so many things, they were monitoring my pregnancy pretty close, I honestly can't remember if they tested for it or not. I just remember my OB not being too concerned about it when I told her LO had it. She said there wasn't really anything they could do anyways and they were already doing regular ultrasounds on me and the baby looked fine plus most people have already had it as kids.

And yeah, the symptoms can be flu like before the rash shows up. Low grade fever etc. I thought LO just had a cold and I didn't take him in until he broke out in the rash all over his face and hands.

Im so confused because at first her ped said fifths but she didn't have the classics "slapped cheek" and her rash was barely visable at that point on her torso. It dissappeared as fast as it showed up. She also tested her for strep but said she doubt that's what it was. The test was positive. I know some kids can get a rash with strep so I'm just so confused and worried. I'm still wanting for my blood test results, they won't be ready till Monday. Does her rash look like what your sons did? How long did his rash last? Sorry, it won't let me post a pic. Was the rash only on his hands and face?

Nope, I'm not immune to it. Blood work came back showing no immunity but no recent exposure to it. I have to get rechecked in 4 weeks since there's a 4-21 day incubation period. So, needless to say I'll be a nervous wreck for the next month. Though I'm starting to doubt that's what DD had because she never got the "slapped cheeks" nor the entire body rash. I'm hoping the little rash she has for a day was because of her recent strep throat diagnosis.
