Nehemiah Griego
A New Mexico judge approved the 2018 release of a teen who killed his mom, dad, a younger brother, and two younger sisters when he was 15.
Now 18, Nehemiah Griego is slated to be a free man in March 2018 when he turns 21. Based on teacher and psychiatrist testimony, Griego’s public defender successfully argued that he “has gotten better and deserves a second chance” due to strides made in light of schizoaffective and post-traumatic stress disorder diagnoses in addition learning disabilities, according to the New York Post.
In October, the teen pleaded guilty on two counts of second-degree murder and three counts of child abuse resulting in death. First shooting his mother while she was asleep, the then 15-year-old then opened fire on his three younger siblings aged 9, 5 and 2 using his parents semi-automatic rifles. From there, he fatally shot his father — a pastor and former gang member — in a sneak attack. Authorities also claimed he reloaded the weapon and planned to shoot shoppers at a Wal-Mart.

Though Griego’s public defender Jeffrey Buckels claimed that the fact that he pleaded guilty shows he has taken responsibility for the egregious crime, prosecutors argued that the teen was nonchalant about the shootings at the time — and even during last year’s evaluation.
Prosecutors also testified that Griego’s behavior was especially disturbing. Not only did he wake up his 9-year-old brother and show him his mother’s body before killing him, Griego also took pictures of his mother and brother’s bodies before opening fire on his two younger sisters.
While Judge John Romero approved the 2018 release (which may include continued psychiatric treatment), Bernalillo County district attorney Kari Brandenburg weighed in and announced she will appeal this decision.
“What I was expecting was justice. I thought justice would be served, and obviously that didn’t happen,” Griego’s older sister Vanessa Lightbourne told KOAT. “I don’t understand how somebody can kill five people and just get a slap on the wrist and basically become a free man with a clean record. It was just quite sad to hear.”
